Electronic components in the automotive industry has gone through a tremendous development in that last decade.  Investments in camera techniques and Light Detection and Ranging, LIDAR, as in AI and image processing, have been, and still are, extensive. NOW has had the privilege to deliver succesfull product developments in these areas. Some of these projects have included early research in new technology areas. We have also delivered complete development of products according to automotive standards.

    Flex-rigid PCB

    A circuit board for evaluation of IR sensors, previously developed by NOW, was redesigned into a flex-rigid PCB. The board consists of five rigid parts, with flexes in between. The board has sensitive analogue parts that receive two channels of data from the IR sensor. The data is converted to 16-bit digital values that are sent to an Altera FPGA, which sends the data to the host computer over an LVDS channel.

    Simulation of an IR camera in Matlab

    A tool in Matlab which is used for calibration and simulation an IR camera . You can also measure 3D noise in videos, which is a good way to measure the IR sensor quality.

    Modular data collection

    Development of hardware and software for video and audio collection systems in ships. The assignment involved multiple projects, since the system is modular with a CPU board as a base and expansion boards for each subproject. For picture and sound management we used an Analog Devices Blackfin DSP (programmed in C, C + + and assembler) and an Altera Cyclone II FPGA (programmed in VHDL). The system receives and compresses video and audio to JPEG and MPEG1 Layer 2 in real time.

    Collecting data from GPS

    PCB design for collecting data from GPS etc in ship systems. The circuit board follows the customer’s compact build system, and can operate either as a slave or master. The board receives six NMEA channels, has two RS-485 channels and 10/100 Ethernet. The board is controlled by an ARM9 processor and an Altera Cyclone II FPGA.

    EMC

    NOW helped with addressing electrical safety and EMC-related problems in a measuring instrument for industrial processes. The customer’s external PCB layout resource received directives from NOW.

    Fire alarm

    Feasability studies for a robust fire alarm, for use in for example an engine house, have been made. The product was based upon two-wire communication and had electronics for up to +150 degrees Celsius use.

    TFT Display

    Embedded 8.4@ TFT display with software, mechanics and image processing. Used in military operator systems under harsh environments for displaying camera video, with crosshairs and OSD (On Screen Display). Includes a microprocessor for system control and an Altera Cyclon II FPGA for image processing and display control. The job included the development of the full system: the display itself, mechanics, electronics and programming.

    CMOS display

    NOW participated in the development of a display for car dashboards. Requirements specification, selection of a custom made CMOS display supplier, manufacturing of prototypes, verification, testing equipment and manufacturing, were included in the commission.

    Controller board

    A controller board for a 30 inch DVI flat panel. An Atmel microprocessor manages the display control and serial port communication. The system is situated at an operator seat with military requirements.

    Vision system for inspecting dashboards

    NOW has developed a vision system for inspecting dashboards. The system is built using DirectShow and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003. Cameras deliver images that are handled in real time. Possible parameters to inspect are: colour, intensity, shape, symbols, segment displays, LCD displays, indicator positions and indicator needle movement. The application encapsulates a scripting language that is easily configured through a graphichal interface. Optional controls/commands are carried out in sequence. The system communicates with the client’s control system via TCP/IP.

    EMC improvements

    NOW has simulated and implemented EMC improvements on an infrared camera to meet the requirements of the automotive environment. Improvements were made primarily on the link between the controller and the camera, but also on the internal parts of the camera, such as DC/DC converters, etc.

    Military memory module

    Development of a portable military memory module and its holder, for use in a tank. The mechanical design is very robust in order to withstand the environment of military combat vehicles. The electrical interface to the memory module is a CAN-bus. The module is based on a Philips 87C592 microcontroller and flash memory. NOW has also mass-produced the memory module and its holder during a five year period.

    Frame grabber/image processor

    NOW has developed an image processor for traffic tolls. It is a PCI board with two camera inputs for optical fiber. The design included PCBs and VHDL code for “soft” parallel processing in FPGA used for image processing in real time, and development of drivers for Linux and Windows.
